Chapter Seventeen

She sprinted toward the house, fear propelling her like a jet rocket.

“JoJo!” she shrieked.

Nothing.

“Where are you?”

She ran around the house. The entire back side of the house was going up in vicious red tongues of death.

A wall of red and orange covered the building. But, through it, two dark figures stood out, silhouetted as they struggled. JoJo’s enormous frame stood out. No doubt who that was.

But, he staggered back and forth drunkenly as he fought with another person.

The other person, a man, shoved him, and JoJo went down.

“Stop!” she screamed. But the noise of the fire and their distraction as they fought covered up her voice.

The doorway was an immense sheet of fire blocking her from them.

Turning, she bolted toward the front entrance. That man could kill JoJo before she got to him. JoJo was big, but the guy he was fighting had somehow gotten the upper hand.

At the front door, she hesitated only for a second, looking in through the smoke, trying to see if the man who’d fought with JoJo was hiding inside, waiting for her. Damn, she wished she had her gun.

Flames were now licking up the frame of the inside doorway that led to the back of the house.

Terror gripped her. Run into a burning building, with a crazed serial killer inside? Fear of those flames gripped her, like a giant hand clenching and squeezing her, almost stopping her from entering.

But JoJo was inside. He could die if she didn’t help him.

JoJo was one of her best friends. He’d been her first photographer when she’d gotten to Atlanta. She’d begun to consistently ask for him until they’d just known to give him to her every day.

They were a team. And good friends.

He had two little kids who needed their daddy to come home. Not to mention a wife who loved him.

Fury gripped her, pushing back the fear. Fury and righteous anger at this person who thought he could take away her friend, Felicity’s husband and most importantly, those two little kids’ daddy.

She looked around for a weapon. An old two-by-four lay on the ground, probably pulled loose from the porch by some kids or a homeless person.

She grabbed it, took a deep breath, pulled her shirt up over her mouth and nose, and ran into the burning house. Ran for all she was worth, ran for all JoJo was worth.

Smoke pulsed in the room. It swirled snakelike around the door, then upwards, quickly filling the front room. She squinted to get her bearings, then ran straight back.

At the back room, she saw a blurry figure leaning over JoJo. Tying him up?

Planning to leave him to burn?

She ran toward the figure, stopping a few feet away. The noise of the fire, and the thick smoke hid her approach from the man who crouched over JoJo.

Swinging the two-by-four backward, she then brought it forward with all her might. It connected with the man’s head with the sound of a watermelon hitting a concrete sidewalk.

The man staggered away from JoJo, falling to one knee.
